The show was generally well received by critics and fans during its first two seasons. Even celebrated horror author Stephen King praised the series. It won an award for Best TV Movie/Miniseries at the International Emmy Awards. In 2015, Netflix made arrangements to air the third season, contracting 12 episodes.

They later decided to divide the 12 episodes into two seasons. The third aired in 2016. Filming on the fourth season started in summer 2017. Once the series aired on Netflix, Americans gobbled it up. The show earned Emmy Awards for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special.
