Goldie Hawn And Kurt Russell’s Secret To A Long-Lasting Relationship

For over 30 years, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been enamored with each other. The actors have been together since 1983 and to this day are still madly in love. Their relationship is truly one for the books, as it is well known that Hawn and Russell have yet to make things official by tying the knot. The reason they haven't just yet goes beyond the fact that they're not sure. In fact, they're in this for the long haul. But the reason they won't get married might just shock you.

Age Isn't Just A Number

"I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young," Goldie Hawn told BBC on meeting Kurt Russell for the first time. Back then, Hawn had barely reached legal drinking age at 21, while Russell was finally old enough to get his license at 16.

Since the age gap was too wide for them to overcome at the time, Hawn and Russell kept things professional which seemed best since Hollywood relationships typically don't have a reputation for lasting very long. Little did they know, they'd eventually prove everyone wrong.

When Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell first laid eyes on each other, it wasn't love at first sight. They met for the first time on the set of 1968's The One and Only, Genuine Family Band. Russell had a bit-part in the film, while Hawn was making her big-screen debut.

At the time, Russell was a child star contracted by Walt Disney, but he only had three other film credits to his name. Hawn became famous for portraying the "dumb blonde" personality on television and was a regular cast member of the sketch comedy show, Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In.

After her film debut, Goldie Hawn's career was on track to making her the next bankable Hollywood starlet. Her second film was 1969's Cactus Flower. Hawn played 21-year-old Toni Simmons, who attempts suicide after her lover stands her up.

Hawn's performance was well-received which earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress! From there, Hawn's film career had taken off and she quickly became a Hollywood "It" girl. Known for her comedic acting, people flooded the theatres to see a Goldie Hawn flick like 1980's Private Benjamin, which would earn her another Oscar nomination.

Many believe that Walt Disney himself predicted Kurt Russell's rise to action stardom. Disney was dying from lung cancer in 1966, the same year Kurt Russell was signed to a ten-year contract with The Walt Disney Company.

Shortly before his last breath, Disney wrote "Kurt Russell" on a piece of paper with no explanation. To this day, nobody – not even Russell himself – knows why Disney took his name down. One can only assume that Disney was predicting the trajectory of Russell's career. Russell was one of Disney Studio's top stars during the '70s and became an action star in the '80s.

Though he had been acting since childhood, there was a brief moment in which Kurt Russell considered a different career path. Russell's father, Bing Russell, was associated with professional baseball, so it makes sense that the younger Russell would try his hand at the sport as well.

In the early '70s, Russell joined the minor league team Bend Rainbows as a switch-hitting second baseman. As part of the California Angels farm system, Russell led the league with a .563 batting average, but only ever rose to AA class in 1973. After tearing his rotator cuff turning a double play, Russell returned to acting.

For a majority of his career during his youth, Kurt Russell had small parts in television and some films. It wasn't until 1979's Elvis that he earned a Primetime Emmy nomination. But once the '80s hit, Russell became a bankable action star, known for his anti-hero roles.

His breakout role was Snake Plissken in Escape from New York and its sequel, Escape from L.A. Russell did so well in these John Carpenter films, that the director enlisted him for the 1982 flick The Thing. The film was a box-office success but panned by critics.

Throughout the course of her career, Goldie Hawn has proven that she is a woman of many talents. She originally came to Hollywood to be a dancer, but soon became an actress. She even went on to star in two television specials: 1971's Pure Goldie and 1978's The Goldie Hawn Special.

After these feats, it wasn't long before Hawn found herself in the studio. In 1972, she recorded a solo country LP with Warner Brothers. Goldie was recorded with the help of Dolly Parton and Buck Owens and was a successful pop-country crossover for the starlet.

For Hawn's part, her first marriage to dancer-director Gus Trikonis lasted for about four years, but they separated in 1973. She began dating Bill Hudson of the Hudson Brothers and married him in 1976. But after two kids – Oliver and Kate – Hudson filed for divorce in 1980.

The second time Hollywood brought Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell together was for the 1983 film, Swing Shift. Hawn and Russell met once again at an audition for the film. A little older now, you'd think that Russell would know exactly what to say to woo Hawn.

Unfortunately, Russell had spent the previous night drinking and was hiding an intense hangover at the audition, which had him struggling to put words together in a coherent sentence. Russell appeared on Conan and revealed that what he ended up telling Hawn: "Man, you've got a great figure."

After dancing the night away, Hawn took Russell to her newly purchased house but seemed to have misplaced her key. After breaking into Hawn's house, she and Russell started fooling around. But all the tomfoolery came to a stop once the cops showed up, believing that a burglary was taking place.

Both Hawn and Russell already had kids by the time their relationship started. Blending two families together isn't always easy, but for the Hawn-Russell clan it worked out seamlessly. Three years into their relationship, Hawn became pregnant and gave birth to a son, Wyatt Russell, in 1986.

Wyatt's birth made for a total of four kids in the Hawn-Russell brood. By then, Oliver and Kate Hudson were ten and seven years old respectively. Russell's first son Boston was six years old. Most of them would eventually follow in their parents' footsteps.

As the youngest of the brood, Wyatt Russell was constantly surrounded by the success of his parents and siblings, so it wasn't long before he made the move himself. His parents' advice on acting was to "be on time, know your lines, and be a nice guy."

The youngest Russell looks exactly like a young Kurt Russell, which is why it was easy for him to transition into film. Before that, he started out as a professional hockey player. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell even bought a house in Vancouver to support their son's hockey career before he became an actor.

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell got together after starring together in 1984's Swing Shift. From there, their relationship was put to the test, not only off-screen but also in front of the camera. It was in that very movie that Hawn and Russell's undeniable chemistry had shone through, but unfortunately the movie tanked financially.

They were able to follow that up with 1987's Overboard, which was a huge hit. Audiences couldn't get enough of Hawn and Russell together on screen. That was the last time the lovebirds acted in a movie together, but they haven't ruled out more possibilities.

From there, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell would embark on a Hollywood relationship that would stand the test of time – they just didn't know it yet. With two relatively young and attractive stars, you'd think that fidelity would be a prime concern.

"Monogamy is a very tough order. You're in the prime of your life, you are attracted to other people, potentially, you have fantasies about that," Hawn once told People magazine. Though she admitted it wasn't easy, Hawn worked hard with Russell to make their relationship last throughout the years.

For a relationship that has lasted for over three decades without any nuptials, it's hard to believe that Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell only had eyes for each other the whole time. While Hawn alluded to tough times, a source close to the family divulged that infidelity has happened on some occasions.

The source told Closer Weekly, "Goldie admits that she and Kurt both went off course. They were both acting out a little and having trouble communicating. So they called an adult time-out to get some space so tempers could cool." Ultimately, though, Hawn and Russell worked through it to keep their family together.

Hawn and Russell have since been together for over three decades but are famously not married, leaving many to wonder why. Hawn was once personally asked by a reporter if she and Russell would ever tie the knot, to which she replied, "What is marriage going to do for us?"

It seemed that Hawn and Russell weren't interested in making things official and rumor had it that their kids couldn't have agreed more. Fortunately, both Hawn and Russell would later be honored by something else that would commemorate their decades-long Hollywood union together.

It wouldn't be wrong to assume that another key element to Goldie Hawn's and Kurt Russell's long-lasting relationship is space. In giving each other space, the actors are still able to support each other, while doing what makes themselves happy.

This is a concept that reportedly went into the building of one of their homes. Goldie Hawn has a dedicated wing of the house with floor-to-ceiling windows, making it the perfect space for meditation and yoga. Russell's wing is essentially a man cave that is dedicated to his own interests such as hunting.

For as long as they've been together without getting married, many people wonder why the two actors chose to stay together. Goldie Hawn disclosed to Vanity Fair once that avoiding marriage was the key to her lasting relationship with Kurt Russell.

Saying that they would have been "long divorced" had they gotten married early on, Hawn went on to say, "There's something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. For me, I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice."

2017 was actually a huge year for both of the stars. In addition to getting her star, Goldie Hawn made her first film appearance in 15 years. She starred in the movie Snatched alongside Amy Schumer.

Hawn was already over 70 years old when she played the role of Schumer's character's mother Linda Middleton. When she received her star, Hawn looked back at her long career and the humble beginnings from whence she came. She probably couldn't have imagined that her career would take her that far in life and that she'd still be acting.

Many people have contentious relationships with their step-parents over their refusal to accept them. But this couldn't be farther from the case of Kate Hudson and her relationship with Kurt Russell. Russell has been in Hudson's life since she was a baby, which is why she regards Russell as her real father.

Hudson knows her biological father is Bill Hudson, but has publicly expressed her disdain for him. Hudson has said that Bill doesn't have any idea of who she really is, while Russell has been a consistent father figure her whole life.

As difficult as this was for them growing up, luckily they've had the kind and understanding support of Kurt Russell.
