Dorothy Dandridge: A Darling Actress
Dorothy Dandridge (November 9, 1922 – September 8, 1965) was an African-American actress who was also known as a singer in the group The Dandridge Sisters. When she was first starting out, she appeared in a Marx Brothers film, It Can’t Last Forever, which helped to gain her some recognition.
She went on to get roles in more films, and in 1953, she got a role in an all-black musical film adaptation of the Oscar Hammerstein II musical Carmen Jones. That’s when her career really began to take off. Dandridge was married twice, to Harold Nicholas and Jack Denison. Both marriages ended in divorce.
