James Corden Responds to Bill Maher’s Opinions On Fat-Shaming
Last week, Bill Maher went on a pro-fat-shaming rant on his HBO talk show Real Time With Bill Maher. The host had a lot to say about why he thought that fat-shaming was a good thing in society. James Corden responded to Maher's opinion during his own show The Late, Late Show With James Corden.
"Fat isn't a birth defect," said Maher. "Nobody comes out of the womb needing to buy two seats on the airplane. Fat-shaming doesn’t need to end. It needs to make a comeback."
Corden made the choice to respond after he realized his platform gave him the right opportunity to do so.
"If only there was someone with a platform who knew what it was actually like to be overweight, and then I realized, aw that would be me," said Corden.
He completely disagreed with Maher and says that fat-shaming is a form of bullying and that it makes the situation entirely worse.
"I mean, ask literally any fat person – we are literally reminded of it all the time – on airplanes, on Instagram, when someone leaves a pie on the windowsill to cool and they give us a look like 'Don't you dare'," said Corden.
"There's a common and insulting misconception about fat people that we’re lazy and stupid. We’re not ... We know that being overweight isn’t good for us and I’ve struggled my entire life trying to manage my weight and I suck at it."
According to Corden, "a lack of shame" is not the issue. "If making fun of fat people made them lose weight there would be no fat kids in schools and I'd have a six-pack by now," said Corden.
Corden concluded his own rant on the subject with a message for Maher himself.
"In the meantime, Bill, while you're encouraging people to think about what goes into their mouths, just think a little harder about what comes out of yours," said Corden.
