Lizzo Is Accused of Plagiarism On Song ‘Truth Hurts’
Looks like Lizzo could be headed for some legal troubles. The rapper's hit song "Truth Hurts" has taken the world by storm and breaking Billboard records as it stays at the top of the charts. However, claims of plagiarism have been bought against her by producer Justin Raisen.
Raisen claims that "Truth Hurts" is similar to a track he wrote with Lizzo on April 11th, 2017 called "Healthy." His complaint is centered around the melody and the opening line "I just took a DNA test, turns out I'm a 100% that b----," which is the star lyric of the entire song.
"We were never contacted about being credited for the use of the parts of 'Healthy' (melody, lyrics, and chords) that appear in 'Truth Hurts'," Raisen wrote on Instagram.
"Truth Hurts" was released in 2017 but has only recently started to gain popularity. Raisen says he has been trying to settle the dispute with Lizzo out of the public for the past two years.
"We've tried to sort this out quietly for the last two years, only asking for 5% each but were shutdown every time," wrote Raisen. "Coming forward publicly to family, friends, artists, and colleagues seems to be the only way at this point in relieving some of our emotional distress caused by this."
If the dispute is settled, he promises to share some of the proceeds with Mina Lioness, who has accused Lizzo of stealing the opening line. We'll see how this all turns out, but for Lizzo it's just even more exposure for the singer. No such thing as bad publicity, right?
