People Are Outraged This Mom Let Her Friend Breastfeed Her Baby, So She Could Drink
Breastfeeding can come naturally to some mothers and be difficult for others. And sometimes, a mom just wants to indulge in a drink, which is fine.
But when two friends posted a video about milk-sharing so one mom could drink, the internet was divided.
Breastfeeding Bosom Buddies
Two breastfeeding bosom buddies went viral on TikTok recently.
Grace, who posted the TikTok video, asked her friend to breastfeed her baby so she could have a couple of drinks.
A Divided TikTok Community
Her video was flooded with comments; most were positive, some were negative, and others were shocked.
One commenter shared her perspective, “People thinking this is weird but drink milk from another animal lol.”
Some Were Confused
One comment read,
“I don’t get it; why is your best friend breastfeeding your baby? You can have a drink and breastfeed at the same time!” This comment pushed Grace to make another TikTok.
Grace's Other Tik Tok Video
In the video, Grace explains,
“My friend has a 7-month-old. He’s out of state for the weekend. I let her nurse him to strengthen his immune system. And also to relieve her.”
It Is Ok To Drink And Nurse
She continued,
“It is absolutely okay to drink and nurse. If you’re feeling sober enough to drive, you can nurse. I trust her to breastfeed my baby because she breastfeeds her own.”
Wait A Couple Of Hours After Having A Drink
It is true that if you’re a breastfeeding mother, you can safely have one drink and breastfeed, so long as you do not feel intoxicated.
If you drink, it’s also a good idea to wait a couple of hours before breastfeeding your baby.
Darker Beers Help Milk Production!
In fact, darker beers that have extra barley and hops are known to help a mother’s breast milk production.
If you want to try it, milk stouts are one of the best drinks to have while breastfeeding.
What Did Women Do Before Formula?
Now, to those who are solely upset at Grace for having her friend breastfeed her baby, it's actually not uncommon. In fact, it's happened throughout history.
What do you think moms would do before formula?
Wet Nurses Were The Way To Go
Many women were wet nurses back in the day, and it was their job to breastfeed and care for someone else’s child.
How would a baby be able to live if its mom died? Or if she could not create breastmilk? Wet nurses were hired for these reasons.
Royal Families Wanted More Heirs Quickly
Historically, royal families would hire wet nurses so the queen could try to have another baby quickly.
Because if a mother is solely breastfeeding, it’s hard to get pregnant again.
Breast Milk Donations
Even in the 20th century, some mothers would sell their breastmilk to help other mothers who could not breastfeed.
And apparently, wet nursing and milk sharing is becoming a popular trend again in recent years.
Milk-Kinship
In some cultures, wet nurses connected families, giving a kinship to the children called “milk-siblings.”
And this gave the wet nurse the term “milk-mother,” like many use the term godmother.
