Within days of his 10th wedding anniversary, BMX legend Dave Mirra committed suicide at his best friend’s house. Shocked friends in his hometown of Greenville, North Carolina, said the famous biker had shown no outward signs of being depressed.

Mirra was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is a neurodegenerative disease that contributes to depression, memory loss, and even dementia. The disease is common in athletes who sustain head injuries.
