On the morning of June 8, 2018, the world received the news that celebrity chef and author Anthony Bourdain had committed suicide overnight in his Strasbourg, France, hotel room. His body was discovered by a friend. Bourdain was 61 years old and left behind an 11-year-old daughter, Ariane.

Bourdain had made a name for himself with the book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, and then with several food and travel shows. He was in France to film episodes of his hit series Parts Unknown.
