The Fast And Furious Franchise Is Giving Women A Chance Behind The Wheel
Universal Studios
Through the course of nine movies, women have never been more than supporting characters in The Fast and The Furious franchise. Franchise star Vin Diesel, who has headlined all but two of the films, announced recently that a female driven spin-off has been greenlit, “this week we heard a pitch for the Fast female protagonist driven spinoff… and it was VERY exciting. Shout out to Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, Geneva Robertson-Dworet.”
The move is a little surprising. The Fast and The Furious franchise has never been known for its equal treatment of women. Aside from Michelle Rodriguez’s character, most women in the high octane franchise have been forced to showcase their bodies instead of their talents.
More recent installments have tried to rectify this, casting more and more strong women, including Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano (both from UFC). Still, handing an entire piece of the universe to women is a bold move. It’s also an incredibly smart move.
Wonder Woman proved that movies about kick butt women can drive audiences to the theaters by the millions. Captain Marvel is currently on pace to be one of the MCU’s biggest opening weekends of all-time. The Fast and The Furious producers are sensing a shift in cinematic power and are choosing to embrace it. Hopefully their efforts are sincere.
