Mehmet Cengiz Oz was born on June 11, 1960, to parents Suna and Mustafa Oz in Cleveland, Ohio. After a few years, the family moved to Wilmington, Deleware where he was raised for the majority of his life. Although he spent most of his childhood in the United States, he made frequent visits to his parents’ homeland of Turkey. Growing up in a mixed Muslim environment, these trips helped to open the young Oz’s mind and eventually helped to push him into the direction of becoming a surgeon for his profession. By the age of seven, Oz had declared that he had wanted to work in the medical field, after watching his father work as a surgeon at the Wilmington Medical Center.
