The Rivalry Between Ann Landers And Abigail Van Buren Led To “Dear Abby”

They weren’t always known as Ann Landers and Abigail Van Buren. When they were born, their names were Eppie and Pauline Lederer. Eppie became Ann when she took over the famous “Ask Ann Landers” column in 1955. Jealous of her sister’s success, Pauline started “Dear Abby” as a way to compete with her sister.
