These Famous Faces Have Said “I Do” Four Times or More
Finding love is never easy, but when you're famous it can be even harder. There are multiple factors to consider, from hectic schedules to the intentions of potential partners. After all, there are prenups for a reason! Some celebrities love being in love so much that they've tied the knot multiple times. More power to them — sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince (or princess). Take a look at some of these famous faces that said "I do" more four times or more.
Mickey Rooney (8)
Mickey Rooney has had just as many marriages as Elizabeth Taylor, proving that it can take a little work to find the one you're meant to be with. Rooney famously wed Ava Gardner in 1942, but the marriage was short-lived. He had two more marriages in the '40s, to B.J Baker and Martha Vickers.
In the '50s, Martha Vickers and Elaine Devry took on the title of Mrs. Rooney. The '60s were reserved for Marge Lane and Carolyn Hackett. It seemed like the actor was unlucky in love, up until Jan Chamberlin came along in the late '70s. The couple has been together since they tied the knot in 1978.
Rue McClanahan (6)
Rue McClanahan is best known for her role as Blanche Devereaux in the hit TV show Golden Girls. The actress captured hearts from the very beginning of her career thanks to her no-nonsense attitude. The Oklahoma native was married six times in her 76 years.
Tom Bish was the first lucky man, followed by Norman Hartweg, Peter DeMaio, Gus Fisher, Tom Keel and finally, Morrow Wilson, whom she wed in 1997. McClanahan remained married to Wilson up until her death in 2010, although they separated a year earlier. Despite six marriages, McClanahan had only one child, son Mark Bish whom she shared with her first husband.
Jerry Lee Lewis (7)
Hitmaker Jerry Lee Lewis faced some backlash with his love interests. After his first two marriages failed, he tied the knot with his first cousin once removed, Myra Gale Brown. Not only was it controversial because they were related, but Brown was allegedly just 13 at the time. They had two children together before divorcing in 1970.
Most of Lewis' marriages were short-lived, lasting between 77 days to 20 months, but his sixth union to Kerrie McCarver lasted two decades. A year after their divorce in 2005, Lewis said "I do" once more to Judith Brown. The couple remain together.
Elizabeth Taylor (8)
Elizabeth Taylor was as famous for her personal life as she was for her on-screen talents. As well as marrying Richard Burton twice, the actress was also married to Conrad Hilton, Kr., Michael Wilding, Mike Todd, Eddie Fisher, John Warner and finally Larry Fortensky.
Taylor didn't regret a single thing but made no secret of the fact that Burton was the love of her life. "After Richard, the men in my life were just there to hold the coat, to open the door. All the men after Richard were really just company." The Cleopatra star was devastated when Burton passed away in 1984.
Lana Turner (8)
Siren of Golden Age Hollywood Lana Turner knew a lot about love - namely that it could take a while to find it. The actress was married a total of eight times, starting with Artie Shaw in 1940. Shaw and Turner divorced the same year.
Among the stars, other husbands were Steve Crane, Bob Topping, Lex Barker, Fred May, Robert Eaton, and Ronald Pellar. Each marriage lasted less than five years. Unfortunately, Turner never quite found her one true love. Instead, she enjoyed the adoration of millions of fans across the world and is remembered as a one-of-a-kind personality that is dearly missed.
Zsa Zsa Gabor (9)
Zsa Zsa Gabor made quite the impact over the course of her 99 years. Her stage career began when she was crowned Miss Hungary in 1936, before she made her way to the silver screen.
Gabor was married a staggering nine times. In her autobiography, she said, "All in all, I love being married. I love the companionship, I love cooking for a man, and I love spending all of my time with a man. Of course I love being in love, but it is marriage that really fulfills me. But not in every case." She wed Frederic Prinz von Anhalt in 1986 and remained married to him until her death in 2016.
Larry King (8)
Larry King makes a living out of making jokes on TV, sometimes at his own expense. He married his first love, Freda Miller in 1952, before going on to marry Annette Kaye, Alene Akins, Mickey Sutphin, Alene Atkins again, Sharon Lepore, and Julie Alexander over three decades.
Sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs, right? King met Shawn Southwick in 1997, and despite filing for divorce in 2010, the pair reconciled and are still going strong. They share two sons together, Chance and Cannon, along with Southwick's son from a previous relationship. On their 10th anniversary, King joked, "She's the only one to have lasted into the two digits."
Eddie Fisher (5)
Singer Eddie Fisher was married to actress Debbie Reynolds in 1955, but it's rumored that he left her for her best friend, Elizabeth Taylor, whom he married in 1959. They stayed together for five years before divorcing. After that, Fisher married Connie Stevens, Terry Richard and finally, Betty Lin, bringing his grand total to five.
He married his final wife, Betty, in 1993. The couple stayed together up until her death in 2001. On a side note, Fisher is the father of the late Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, and subsequently the grandfather of her daughter, actress Billie Lourd.
Tony Curtis (6)
There was only one thing in this world that Tony Curtis loved more than acting. Women. Known as somewhat of a Don Juan throughout his life, the star lived life at full-speed. He married actress Janet Leigh in 1951. The union lasted just over a decade, with Curtis going on to wed 18-year-old Christine Kaufmann in 1962.
Over the next few decades, the actor married a further three times, before sealing the deal for the sixth and final try in 1998 to Jill Vanderburg, 45 years his junior. They stayed married until Curtis' death in 2010 age 85. He called Vanderburg the "sexiest woman I've ever known."
Kenny Rogers (5)
Country superstar Kenny Rogers has been able to get a lot of inspiration for his tunes from his five marriages. Known as one of the nicest guys in the biz, it's not hard to see why ladies fall for him.
Janice Gordon was the first Mrs. Rogers back in 1958, but the marriage only lasted two years. Rogers gave it three more shots over the course of the next few decades and even stayed married to Marianne Gordon for 16 years. When they split, he found his everlasting love with Wanda Miller. They've been happily married since 1997 and have two children together.
Rita Hayworth (5)
Rita Hayworth may have had some incredible times on-screen, but her personal life was a different story. Hayworth was married five times, but would later allege that all of her husbands were abusive in some way. She famously said, "Basically, I am a good, gentle person, but I am attracted to mean personalities."
Her first husband, Edward C. Judson, extorted her financially, while her second husband, writer Orson Welles refused to settle down. She went on to marry Prince Aly Khan, whom she divorced in 1951 citing "extreme mental cruelty." Hayworth's relationships with Dick Haymes and James Hill didn't fair much better.
Martin Scorsese (5)
Can you imagine having Ingrid Bergman as your mother-in-law? Most people don't know that Martin Scorsese, aka one of the best directors ever, was married to Bergman's daughter Isabella Rossellini for three years in the early '80s before they went their separate ways.
That was Scorsese's third marriage, as he'd already exchanged vows with Laraine Marie Brennan and Julia Cameron before that. After Rossellini, there was Barbara De Fina. The marriage lasted six years. In 1999, the filmmaker finally struck gold with Helen Morris. They share one daughter together and live in New York City. This year will be their 20th wedding anniversary.
Billy Bob Thornton (6)
Billy Bob Thornton has had his fair share of romance. Remember when he was Mrs. Angelina Jolie for three years in the early noughties? The couple was so into each other they wore vials of one another's blood around their necks.
His first wife was Melissa Lee Gatlin, followed by Toni Lawrence, Cynda Williams, Pietra Dawn Cherniak and as we've mentioned, Angelina Jolie. Shortly after his union to Jolie dissolved, Thornton met makeup artist Connie Angland in 2003. They initially had no plans to get hitched, but had a private ceremony in 2014 to make it official, despite Thornton previously saying, "Marriage doesn't work for me."
Christie Brinkley (4)
Model Christie Brinkley still looks just as incredible today as she did in the '70s. Now 65, the blonde-haired beauty has enjoyed an illustrious career in the entertainment industry - and continues to do so.
In 1973, French artist Jean-Francois Allaux had the pleasure of being Mr. Christie Brinkley, but the marriage ended in 1981. Her second husband was the most famous of all, musician Billy Joel. They had one daughter together before calling it quits in 1994. Richard Taubman married Brinkley in 1994, but the marriage only lasted a couple of years. Her fourth and final union to Peter Cook lasted 12 years before it ended in 2008.
Liza Minnelli (4)
Daughter of the late Hollywood icon Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli is a star in her own right. The Cabaret actress is known for her incredible stage presence and is considered a gay icon.
Minnelli has been married four times. Her first marriage to Peter Allen ended when she discovered he was gay by walking in on him with another man. After that, Judy's daughter wed Jack Haley Jr., the son of Jack Haley, who played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. Minnelli's longest marriage was to Mark Gero, whom she married in 1979. The union lasted 12 years before they called it quits.
Frank Sinatra (4)
Ol' blue eyes had everything that women adored. The looks, the charm, and the talent. Frank Sinatra had some incredibly high-profile wives following on from his first marriage to Nancy that ended in 1951. Shortly after their divorce, he coupled up with Ava Gardner.
Mia Farrow was next to hold the Mrs. Blue Eyes title, but it would be his fourth and final wife Barbara Marx that would stick. Sinatra tied the knot with the former showgirl in 1976. They remained a happy couple until Frank's death in 1998 at 82 years old. Marx herself never remarried after the loss of her husband.
Janet Leigh (4)
Janet Leigh was so young and fresh-faced when she married Tony Curtis that the world at large assumed it was her first trip down the aisle. In fact, it was Leigh's third. She married her first husband when she was just 15, but it was annulled four months later. When the actress was 18, she wed sailor Stanley Reames, but they parted ways four years later.
Curtis came along in 1951, but once again Leigh was out of luck in love. They split in 1962. Stockbroker Robert Brandt met Leigh by chance, and it would be a complete game changer. The two were together for 42 years by the time Janet passed away in 2004.
Louis Armstrong (4)
Louis Armstrong is a staple in American jazz history, as one of the biggest stars of his era. He did more than just play jazz - he defined it. Armstrong married his first wife, Daisy Parker, in 1918.
He went on to get hitched to Lil Hardin Armstrong and Alpha Smith, before finding his soulmate in Lucille Wilson. The pair met when Wilson was working as a singer at the Cotton Club. Armstrong said "I do" alongside Wilson in 1942, and despite a couple of affairs, they stayed together until he died in his sleep in 1971 after suffering a heart attack.
Cheryl Tiegs (4)
Known to many as the "first American supermodel," Cheryl Tiegs was one of the top models of her time. Although she keeps a lower profile these days, there was a time when Tiegs' love life gained a lot of speculation.
Her first husband was Stan Dragoti, whom she divorced in 1979. She then went on to marry Peter Beard, but the relationship only lasted two years. Anthony Peck, son of Gregory Peck, charmed Tiegs in 1990, and her fourth and final marriage to yoga instructor Rod Stryker also ended after just a few short years. These days, Tiegs is a happy, independent woman.
Doris Day (4)
American icon Doris Day is no stranger to affairs of the heart, having walked down the aisle four times. Her first husband was Al Jorden, a trombonist she met while singing for Barney Rapp's Band. She went on to marry George William Weidler three years after her 1943 divorce, but it didn't last long.
In 1951, she married Martin Melcher, a union which would last right up until Melcher's death in 1968. Day would later accuse Melcher of extorting money from her during their relationship. Her fourth and final marriage was also ill-fated, resulting in a divorce in 1982. Barry Comden complained that his ex-wife loved her animals more than him.
