While filming the surf movie Of Men and Mavericks back in 2012, Gerard Butler nearly died while getting into character. An unexpected set of huge waves pulled Butler under the water. He was unable to pull himself up and was dragged over a rock reef.

He was taken to the Stanford Medical Center, where he was determined to make a quick recovery to get back to filming. “This was maybe one of the few times that the reports were not exaggerated… [The waves] just took me and I couldn’t get up. It was pretty hairy,” Butler said on The Graham Norton Show.
