Both Beyoncé and her sister Solange have made a name for themselves by championing black equality. Beyoncé even graced the red carpet with the mothers of the Black Lives Matter movement. According to Solange, their politically-charged music stems from one place: their mother.

“If my sister and my project feels like an ‘awakening’ to some,” Solange told The New York Times, “I am constantly saying that we both grew up in a home with two words: Tina Knowles.”
