On May 30, 1980, a then 19-year-old Jim Hobson and friends were water skiing at Saddle Dam Park. Little did they know that Mt. St. Helens was about to erupt right beside them. The eruption came after a series of earthquakes in the area and is considered the most disastrous volcanic eruption of the century. Miraculously, the boys weren’t harmed by the eruption and even continued to ski while watching the eruption in awe. while the boys were fine, 57 people died from the tragic event.
