On February 15, 1961, a Boeing 707 aircraft crashed while traveling from New York City to Belgium. Sabena Flight 548 was nearing the runway threshold when the flight had to cancel its final approach due to a small aircraft still being on the runway. The flight never made it back. All 72 people aboard the plane (as well as one on the ground) were killed in the tragic crash including the entire U.S. figure skating team, which was en route to the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague. In the final photo taken of the team, they look happy to be embarking on their journey.
